"The Duke"

In The Duke, American Jazz Icon Duke Ellington gazes out with a smouldering intensity. At first glance, the painting seems symmetrical. With both bent arms folded behind his back, the sartorially splendid Duke stands poised, balanced and erect. In fact, it is the subtle deviations from this balanced position that serve as Sumi-e syncopations. These unexpected accents give "The Duke" its dynamic assymetry. For example his crisp bow tie, instead of being exactly horizontal and motionless, is ever so slightly askew.
