Background
Long-time collectors of Drue's work, Sue and Mel approached Drue to capture their sons in Sumi-e. "A new room is being built, and I know just where the two paintings will hang," said Sue. "How soon can you see the space?" Drue made the first of many afternoon visits to their beautiful home to talk to the boys about basketball and catch some of their pickup games.
Client Goals
Sue and Mel told Drue that they wanted her to capture the intangible qualities that are John and Ryan. "I want them to look at their portraits when they get older and recognize some distinctive quality that was apparent even at an early age. I'm asking for a moment in time that will be timeless," said Sue.
Solution
Over a period of many months, Drue keenly observed the young sports enthusiasts. In the waning light of the autumn afternoons, their distinctive personalities emerged as they honed their athletic skills. Drue internalized a feeling for this dynamic duo and chose the metaphor of the boys' beloved activity, basketball to distill their irrepressible spirit in her ebony-inked brush strokes.
- Two Original Paintings - Drue entitled her project Double Feature Scores Big and painted two portraits John's Got Game and Ryan's Right On. Drue composed the paintings to create a feeling that the shared bond of the two brothers linked the paintings in the negative space between them.
In John's Got Game, she captured the essence of a vibrant young man poised to shoot, and win on and off the court. He's serious and determined, two defining characteristics that have prepared John for a brilliant college career. In Ryan's Right On, the young boy is always stretching to reach his potential and push his limits with all possibilities before him. - Private Unveiling - Drue unveiled the portraits of the two brothers at an intimate gathering. Family and friends reminisced as the interactive paintings were experienced. Favorite memories and stories among the guests were shared in the lively setting.
