<image:caption>After the Celestial Axe is a sculpture with 27 mirrored surfaces that reveals a magical, multi-planar universe. As you walk through the forest, you encounter the sculpture shining mysteriously and brightly through the trees. The sculpture is comprised of a moss-covered fallen oak tree sliced up by a Celestial Axe and covered in layered frothy mirror fragments, shaped and arranged with a high degree of optical awareness and purpose. The artwork shows the aftermath of an event of incomprehensible proportions – an Axe that fell mysteriously from the skies, leaving a sparkling residue of starry formations. When seen from afar, these reflective arrangements sparkle in the sun; but when examined more closely, they reflect, refract, expand and transform the environment and the viewer. How or why the Celestial Axe fell is a part of a hidden narrative.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Medium: Brainwaves, Smartglass, living tree, Sumi ink, mounted rice paper, mirror Dimensions: 55 x 65 x 28 cm Created: 2012 “The Tree of Pascal” is a collaboration among 100+ brains from all over the world to keep a small tree alive. It is an artwork, but also a digitally-enabled ecosystem. It leverages modern technologies, such as EEG, electrochromic glass, and digital signal processing, but is rooted in the haunting words of a 17th century French mathematician & philosopher. I wanted to create an artwork that is so flexible that everybody can find a place in it, both literally and metaphorically. I also wanted to send the viewers on a search for their own Tree of Pascal, which they want to nurture with mental energies.</image:caption>

To see the artwork, the viewer needs to peek inside the box, & can never see the art in its entirety at once. This is designed to mimic the natural cognitive process, where an individual unites more, or less, faded memories with vibrant immediate experiences to patch together the canvas of knowledge. </image:caption>

Medusa, a woman of stunning beauty and a virgin priestess in Athena’s Temple, was raped by Poseidon. Instead of recognizing her as a victim, Athena punished Medusa by turning her into a hideous monster, a gorgon, with hairs made of living venomous snakes. </image:caption>

<image:caption>Medium: Sumi ink mixed with melted Davos snow water on Japanese scroll, mirror, lights Dimensions: 151 x 51 cm Created: 2010 The Alpine landscape unfurls in nuanced brush strokes. The ink was mixed with melted Davos snow-water. The mirror is a bridge into the mountains, hanging over the abyss. Maybe it’s covered with ice, or maybe it is actually a mythical frozen Alpine river. The footsteps, made of light, lead the viewer into the mountain—or perhaps they are the viewer’s own footsteps, made of light. Created in 2010, this is one of Drue's first works exploring the intersection of mirrors and ink, merging environment and artistic reality, and projecting the viewer into the negative space.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Medium: Sumi ink on mounted rice paper Dimensions: 120 x 180 cm Created: 2011 Sigmund Freud had a couch in Vienna where his patients laid to be hypnotized. There, the secrets of their unconscious were released. In this artwork, you can see the outline of his couch in the “negative” (white) space. The subject matter serves as a departure point for an in-depth exploration of human psyche—Eros and Thanatos, sin and suffering, pain and pleasure, desire and longing, misgivings and anger, illusions and sudden realization, suppression and sublimation, etc. It is a multifaceted mirror through which the viewer can explore his or her deeply hidden secrets. The couch becomes a giant train into the abyss of the unconscious.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Medium: Sumi ink on mounted rice paper Dimensions: 120 x 180 cm Created: 2011 This painting is based on the view from my hotel room in Davos-2011, on an early morning after fresh snowfall. I had woken up at 4 am, looked through the window and saw fresh snow had fallen, covering everything in powder. It was absolutely quiet, yet the experience was musical. Allegro-Largo-Allegro---Fast and Slow tempos flow seamlessly into a continuity of baroque beauty. This visual concerto grosso is in the rare key of C#. The brisk tempos of the globe bracket a Largo in the Alpine heights.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Medium: Installation of hospital bed in a white room, and a soundtrack of airport sounds, high winds & other selected recordings made by the artist Created: 2010 Airport for Souls was inspired by Drue's trip to Japan 2 years ago to see her dad in his hospital room, days before his death from cancer. This work draws the parallel between hospitals and airports-- the hospital is where the human life journey begins and ends. We enter this world as a spot of blood on the hospital sheets, and we leave this world the same way. Blood on the sheets symbolizes simultaneously death and birth, but also the Rising Sun, as a tribute to Drue's dad. The installation includes a hospital bed with a painted red spot and a soundtrack mixing airport recordings, hospital sounds and storm winds to create a haunting impression of the transience of life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artworks - 400,000 Is Not A Number</image:title>
<image:caption>400,000 is Not a Number is an artwork created by Drue Kataoka to highlight the work of Test400k, a campaign founded by Julie Smolyansky and Jason Burdeen to resolve the backlog of 400,000 untested rape kits in the U.S. Artist Statement: “I wanted to invite the viewer to literally stand in the midst of roughly 400,000 circles - each one representing a life, a family, a community, a world that has been impacted. The overwhelming sum of layered circles coalesces to form the image of one woman--- unifying the experiences while allowing them to remain distinct. Some of the circles are so tiny and faint that you have to come very close to even see them, but the art beckons you forward. So the circles are also like grains of sand------ we will never be able to fully count nor measure the collective pain and loss of these rape victims. For me, the woman in profile with wind swirling through her hair is also reminiscent of a nautical “figurehead.” Throughout history, across cultures, figureheads were placed at the prow of ships and were believed to protect the ship from rocks, storms and dangerous winds. In the same way, the woman in the artwork is imparted with a protective quality, drawing on strength from rape-kit analysis advocates, activists, community leaders and policy makers. As this intrepid community leans forward into new waters, she offers her protection on the metaphorical seas.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Medium: Sumi ink on mounted rice paper, Special Relativistic effects (Time Dilation) Dimensions: 88 x 100 cm Created: 2008 This artwork was created by Drue Kataoka for the first zero gravity art exhibit at the International Space Station and includes ink, paper and relativistic effects. Drue designed the art to be separated from itself: one piece of it travelled in Space with Richard Garriott’s mission, and one piece remained on Earth. Due to effects described in Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity, the Celestial piece is a fraction of a second younger than the Terrestrial piece— making the reunited artwork two different ages and a conceptual portrait of the Garriotts—son and father, both astronauts during different eras. UP! is a Rocket in the initial stages of take off, exhaust trailing from the powerful engines. UP! is also a Sumi-e brush, leaving the trace of a brushstroke. UP! is a brush taking off, and a rocket painting a brush stroke. UP! is modern and eternal. This artistic message to the universe carries the transience of the gravity-defying thrust of the rocket into Space and the eternal human quest for beauty and knowledge. </image:caption>

      <image:title>Drue's Samurai Heritage - Samurai Heritage</image:title>
<image:caption>The Kataokas can trace their genealogy with temple records deep in the hills of Nagoya that date back 4 centuries. My father says our family tree is reliable back to 1600. In that year Japan was split into two warring camps, each led by a feudal warlord, vying for hegemony of Japan. One was Tokugawa, the other was Toyotomi, defeated in the battle of Sekigahara. My ancestor fought on the Toyotomi side. After the battle he settled in the village Kataoka, in the mountains of central Japan as the village chieftain. His descendants perfected the art of sake brewing and never left the village.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Drue's Samurai Heritage</image:title>
<image:caption>My father says that our ancestors never forgot how decisively they had been defeated so they always were ready to avenge themselves. Apparently they waited for a call to arms. They maintained their army and waited and waited but such a call never came. The Tokugawa ruled Japan without interruption until 1856. A few years prior to that, a fleet of US naval vessels commanded by Commodore Perry challenged the Tokugawa government to open Japan to international trade. A government crisis ensued, and the Tokugawa were finally overthrown. The change in government finally gave my great grandfather a change to avenge his ancestor's enemy. He enlisted in the imperial army. His unit marched from Kyoto to Edo, which is modern day Tokyo. There they were soundly defeated by remnants of the Tokugawa clan. Undaunted, he returned to his native village of Kataoka and resumed his occupation—a sake brewer. The village of Kataoka still exists but our ancestors have moved away. What I will remember is my ancestors' fierce loyalty to the Toyotomi clan and their willingness to fight for their convictions.</image:caption>

We talked about: The intersection of art, AI, and brain–computer interfaces How the brain could become the next creative medium What happens when technology lets us express subconscious thought ⚖️ And the responsibility artists and technologists share in shaping that future Drue’s perspective is both visionary and deeply human: she reminds us that creativity isn’t just about making. It’s about understanding ourselves and the world more fully.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Brushed by Sun and Sandstone: Stanford 2000 was commissioned as a tribute to President Gerhard Casper as the 9th President of Stanford University. The painting captures the imposing façade of the Bing Wing of the Cecil H. Green Library. Inspired by President Casper's eloquent remarks at the dedication of the Bing Wing, the artist celebrates the library as the cornerstone of a university's role as custodian of many cultures. The president told the Stanford community that it had been a goal to collect all "the books of all the peoples of the world as early as at the beginning of the third century B.C. by the Ptolemy kings of Egypt for the Museum in Alexandria." The Stanford experience and the university's commitment to diversity are indelibly distilled in the brushstrokes of Sumi-e, a 2000 year-old art form.</image:caption>

<image:title>Social Impact - Portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr. Commissioned by Dr. Clayborne Carson</image:title>
<image:caption>Director Clayborne Carson commissioned Sumi-e Artist and Stanford Class of 2000 Drue Kataoka to paint The Unfinished Dream. With the 2000 year-old art Japanese form of Sumi-e, her ebony-inked brush strokes distill Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s heroic essence. The original brush painting is permanently installed at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project and a limited edition commemorative print was produced for the millennial King celebration at Stanford in 2000. Rev. Bernice King was presented with a signed print during the ceremony. In The Unfinished Dream Dr. King's fiery persona implores his audience to march to the drum roll of justice. His dynamic pose rouses us to confront our own inaction. Now silenced his resonant voice becomes the voice of the brush. The single, black strokes jog the soft-edges of memory to counter the deadly inaction and indifference of those who will not listen. Drawing on an ancient language, these powerful strokes deliver a message that is more urgent as the shadows of injustice and inequity of the 20th century linger. Reflected in these black pools of ink are many journeys, long prayerful nights, and the suffering of an entire nation. His eyes seize our collective soul and calls us to action to finish the dream.</image:caption>

<image:title>Social Impact - Print for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America "Jump Rope Junction"</image:title>
<image:caption>Brushed by memories of childhood's promise, the ebony-inked strokes in Jump Rope Junction represent where all possibilities and dreams intersect in a positive place. Three children engaged in a Double Dutch adventure chant Jump Rope Junction to the rhythmic sounds of the girl's jumping feet. A fourth child waits patiently in the negative space for a turn and says, "Let Me Jump In." Sounds are captured in the voice of the brush. The footfalls of rhythmic feet, the soft swell of children's laughter, and the silence of calm resolve are distilled in the black-inked strokes. The sunlight-inflected shadows also remind us that Boys & Girls Clubs have been central to children's lives and have bridged two centuries. The bright blue border not only calls to mind the distinctive blue of the Boys & Girls Clubs' logo but also the blue, blue sky of childhood dreams and hopes. After all, these very dreams and hopes criss cross in Jump Rope Junction.</image:caption>

<image:title>Social Impact - Print for the Pacific Art League "Pacific Riminiscences"</image:title>
<image:caption>Bold, single strokes of a 2000 year-old art form define the cultural landscape where a ribbon of rails gleam in the midnight moonlit sky. The Pacific Rim crescent moon, softly nestled in a bank of nuanced clouds, observes the tension between tradition and innovation and its accompanying dialogue of old and new. El Palo Alto's imposing presence in the background is in counterpoint with the railroad tracks on a continuum in the negative space. Resembling nine smoked, grey keys on an artistic piano, the tracks harmonize with the majestic California redwood. The rough, hewn tracks with their hardened steel frame refer to the explosion of technology of the last century when Leland Stanford Jr. University?s young students defied boundaries and created a cultural Renaissance. They also suggest the promise of technology for the 21st century—its positive influence on the Arts in the Valley. Repeating a sentiment that Art had played an integral role in their lives, the many who shared their "riminiscences" imbued the tracks with the rhythm and syncopation of their extraordinary stories. The tree, the moon, and the tracks challenge the notion of time and space and its intersection with the locus of memory. On the Pacific Rim where all possibilities exist Pacific Riminiscences' legacy endures.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Brushed by the ebony strokes of the 2000 year-old art form of sumi-e,Reach for the Stars visually underscores an urgent message: a girl excels when she sets her mind to it. Distilled in powerful single ebony-inked strokes, a monumentalized girl welcomes Sally Ride's challenge: Reach for the Stars. Her right arm stretches to its limit and even beyond. Knowing no boundaries and defying barriers, it signals her dreams are go for launch. This proud member of the Sally Ride Science Club™ boldly positions herself on the earth's crust. Her eyes fixed determinedly on a luminous star twinkling with the promise of a science adventure. In anticipation of this scientific odyssey, the daring girl thrusts her weight and might forward. Herself a star on the rise, she traces a path with her fingertips on the skies.</image:caption>

Commissioned by Ambassador Bill Lane, honorary Chairman of the Stanford Red Barn festival and painted by Stanford Class of 2000, Drue Kataoka, this painting serves as an artistic tribute to Lane's vision. Rendered in the nuanced inked strokes of a 2000 year-old art form ofsumi-e, these two powerful symbols of the university draw us down history lane. The artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, eight-time Grammy recipient and Pulitzer Prize winner collaborated with Kataoka in an extraordinary project where jazz, justice, and the 2000 year-old art form of sumi-e converge. They joined forces in an artistic response to answer the call of many under-served and under-represented voices. The voice of her brush joined with the voices of the American roux in his trumpet resound with a clarion call to action. All proceeds benefitted the Legal Aid Society.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Koret Foundation's Routes to Learning Initiative focuses on the potential of community-based organizations to provide students with the extra support needed to improve learning skills and abilities. The alternative learning environments and programs that these organizations provide engage youth in ways that are distinct from school, yet contribute to school success. This Initiative provides financial and technical support, with the bottom-line aim of strengthening young people's connections to quality youth organizations and increasing youth participation in educational programs. "TreeHouse Street Smarts is a place where a young person has the creative curiosity and intellectual audacity to chart his/her own destiny," Kataoka says. "TreeHouse Street symbolizes an alternative learning environment that invites young people to expand their academic, cultural, social and civic horizons, a place where the lessons of the classroom are applied and where young people bond."</image:caption>

Explosive Movement, her 4-year exhibition of 50 sports paintings in the Arrillaga Familly Sports Center at Stanford University, drew many visitors and critical acclaim. The Department of Athletics commissioned Drue to create numerous limited edition prints. On the anniversary of the 100th Stanford/Cal Big Game, she created Kick Off 100 to commemorate the storied rivalry of the two universities. The print sold out at the historic game: Stanford 21, Cal 20. For the 1998 Men's Basketball Run to the Final Four, she created Art of the Steal. To celebrate 25 years of Stanford Women's Basketball, she created a six-part series entitled Guarding the Tradition. For men's golf she createdBig Game Tee Time and Cardinal Native: Notah Begay III as well asTee for Two and Fairway to the 21st for the Cal/Stanford Celebrity Golf Invitational at Wente Vineyards. Her print commemorating legendary quarterbacks John Elway and Jim Plunkett was entitledStanford Legends. Tennis luminary Martina Hingis commissioned Drue to paint her portrait. After painting Celestial Tennis: Portrait of Venus Williams, Drue gave Venus Williams a Sumi-e lesson covered by the Korel Tour feed. Denver Broncos great, Hall of Fame quarterback and Stanford Legend John Elway talks with Drue on Stanford's sidelines Motion in Drue's Sumi-e Sports Paintings The crack of the bat. The swish of the net. The rhythm of the ball. The clashing of helmets. Drue captures the explosive energy and beauty of sports motion. Applying her profound understanding of the dynamic flow of a Zen art form, she transforms a fleeting motion into ebony ink. Her technique involves internalizing the gesture and unleashing the power inside of it in her brush strokes. In Competition Cool, a swimmer parts the glistening surface leaving an effervescent wake. In Pitcher Perfect the brush strokes compress the energy of the baseball at its moment of release. In Sumi Slopes the play of negative white space envelops and propels a skier downhill. Monumental and Personal Sports are an epic spectacle, a modern-day battlefield of wills, strength and skill. With its roots in Zen and the Samurai tradition, Drue's art is uniquely suited to depict the heroic efforts of athletes. Drue has interacted with and painted some of the great sports icons of our time. With her brush she captures the monumental side of larger-than-life personalities, but also the internal essence not shown in the sports limelight. Her conversations spanning 5 years with one of the most legendary Coaches in football history culminated in Portrait of Bill Walsh, East Meets West Coast Offense. At his unveiling, he said to Drue, "You've captured me as no one else has." Similarly, tennis star Venus Williams felt Drue had caught her characteristic focus and style. Upon seeing her portrait Venus commented, "That's me when I get serious!" Drue grappled with football history past and present in preparing to paint John Elway. "I recall talking with the Super Bowl legend on the Stanford sidelines at Big Game. He was looking into the future of Stanford football and at the same time remembering the glorious moments in Stanford's stadium." Private Sports Commissions In many of Drue's private portrait commissions, clients request a sports theme or setting. She has painted celebrity athletes, CEOs, sons, brothers, sisters playing their cherished sport. Much more dynamic than a still photograph, Drue's private sports commissions offer the ultimate way to honor or celebrate someone, preserving their legacy and sharing a classic moment or pose. <image:title>Jazz Paintings by Drue Kataoka</image:title>
<image:caption>Jazz Paintings A Lifetime of Listening to Jazz Drue's first exposure to jazz was appropriately—late at night. As a child in Tokyo, she often drifted to sleep listening to her father playing jazz recordings from his vast collection. Her earliest memories of jazz are the melodies that he whistled to her in the darkness. In true oral tradition, he was passing on the love of music he had inherited from his mother. Long before the era of the iPod, Drue's grandmother had something very remarkable in pre-war Japan, — a collection of her very own jazz records. Mentored by Wynton Marsalis In high school Drue had the opportunity to meet and play for Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Wynton Marsalis [portrait]. After one of his concerts, he challenged her to "go get her horn, and play." We have a virtuoso in here," he told saxophonist Wes "WarmDaddy" Anderson. From that moment Marsalis became a great mentor to Drue. Their numerous collaborations began shortly thereafter. In the Spring of that year, Drue played in the main tent at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival with the Kent Jordan quartet. She was invited to have her national artistic debut in New Orleans in early Fall. The great success of her debut and exhibition was marked by a special proclamation of artistic appreciation from New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial. Witness to Jazz Legends During Drue's collaborations with Jazz at Lincoln Center, she has had the chance to observe, work with, paint and study some of the greatest jazz musicians of the 20th century in New York, New Orleans, and on the road. "I've watched up close the soft breath on the rim of their horns. I've witnessed the wisp of an idea as a riff is plucked from midair, not to be recreated again, like a Sumi-e stroke." Over the past two decades Drue has internalized every aspect of the jazz experience backstage, onstage and off. Marsalis personally introduced Drue to many legendary musicians including Jazz Giant Lionel Hampton at a private reception held by Mayor Morial. Drue has also had access to some of the greatest creative forces in Jazz cultural circles. "It's been my great fortune to have interacted and corresponded with Jazz Writer/Historian Albert Murray, contemporary and colleague of writer Ralph Ellison. Whenever I speak to Murray I'm captivated by the way he brings the spirit of his close friends Duke Ellington, Count Basie and so many other cats to life." Miles from Murray's Harlem flat on the East Coast all the way to Hubert Laws sunny Hollywood mansion on the West Coast, Drue's jammed there too. High Profile Jazz Commissions For his 8 part Swinging into the 21st Century Series, Sony Classic and Columbia Records commissioned an original suite of paintings and cover art work for Wynton Marsalis' landmark work, A Fiddler's Taleand a logo for the 8-CD series. Later, Drue was commissioned by law firm Jones Day to paint Marsalis' portrait for a limited edition print and fundraiser for the Legal Aid Society entitled Wynton Marsalis Courtin' the Blues. Drue has been commissioned by jazz musicians and jazz connoisseurs alike including trombone virtuoso Wycliffe PineCone Gordon and bassist extraordinaire Roland Guerin. In addition, her original works are in private collections in New York, New Orleans and the Bay Area. Drue has been interviewed about her jazz paintings on WWOZ Radio, Live at Louis Armstrong Park and on KCSM 91.1, the Bay Area's Jazz Station.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dance Paintings by Drue Kataoka</image:title>
<image:caption>Whisper of brush echoes nameless desires. -Drue Study of Dance Dance and Sumi-e — Painting Movement Painting Romance Study of Dance Drue has studied dance from all angles. As an artist she has carefully observed movement, gesture, and line. As a dancer she has taken lessons in tap, ballet, tango, swing, and ballroom. As a musician she has developed a profound understanding of the rhythmic structure of dance. As a student of movement, Drue has interacted with American dance legends such as Fayard Nicholas of the Nicholas brothers, Founding father of Lindy Hop Frankie Manning and the Queen of Swing Norma Miller. Visually, aurally and kinesthetically, Drue has internalized the essence of dance. Her brush caresses dancers in the eternal dialogue between man and woman, light and dark, day and night. She captures the bittersweet delicacy of a gesture suspended for a moment on the edge of an exquisite dream. Dance and Sumi-e - Painting Movement Drue is continually exploring the parallels between dance and the art of Sumi-e. "The brush must move with the same poise, control and flow of a great dancer—balancing strength and flexibility with the right timing. I want each brush stroke to be a gesture that comes alive in my hands." Embodying the spirit of Zen, Drue's elegant and powerful art is ideal to capture the essence of dance. Her brush draws out the inherent motion in Sumi-e to create movement in a still image. She distills the beauty of a line or fluidity of a pose and delivers a lasting impression of a fleeting moment. Her paintings transcend the still frame of the moment to reveal the inner energy of the dancers. Painting Romance Drue courts subtlety in the conversation of movement between man and woman. "For tango, I feel my brush pulling away with the same reluctance inside of the smoldering dissonances of the bandoneón. For swing, I infuse my brush with the sultry syncopations and rhythmic push-pull of Jazz. For ballet it is a pas de deux of ink and paper." The encompassing embrace of Drue's ebony ink invites the viewer to experience a spectrum of emotion. The paintings radiate the tensions of fiery passion and the softest whisper-like refinements of romance.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Infused with the Stanford Spirit A love of the Stanford experience is infused in Drue's paintings. A Stanford graduate, Drue has been a witness to both grand historic moments and the soft intimate whispers of the Quad. Her brush has caressed the red roofs and sandstone curves as well as the contours of the Stanford spirit itself. Resonating with those who share her passion for The Farm, Drue's paintings have captured the imagination of the concentric rings of the global Stanford Family. Stanford Collectors Drue's Stanford paintings are highly sought-after and valued by alums, friends of the University and collectors. She began chronicling the Stanford landscape during her college years and continues to capture the energy of Silicon Valley that emanates from the historic landmarks, stories and personalities. Distilling quintessential Stanford places in ebony ink, Drue's brush strokes invite the viewer's treasured memories of Mem Chu, Palm Drive, Old Union, Hoover Tower, and the Quad. Extensive Research on Stanford Drue's brush, dipped in years of research and reflection on the essence of Stanford is influenced by time spent with university archivists, Presidents and Deans, Trustees, distinguished alums, Nobel Prize winners, leading-edge scholars, entrepreneurs, and students. Drawn to Stanford's stunning campus architecture, she captures the sandstone textures in a new but timeless way. High Profile Stanford Commissions Her numerous high-profile commissions for various Stanford University groups and organizations have earned high praise. Over 28 commemorative prints along with other printed artwork are permanently archived in The Department of Special Collections in Stanford University Libraries. Stanford's Faculty Club has permanently installed a collection of these sold-out commemorative prints. Stanford Athletic Department Commissions Stanford McClatchy Series Commissions Paintings Installed on Campus Many of Drue's paintings are permanently installed on the Stanford Campus: The Unfinished Dream: Drue's millennial portrait of Dr. King, commissioned by The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute Brushed by Sun and Sandstone: Drue was selected to paint a tribute to President Gerhard Casper when he left office. <image:title>Stanford Sports Art Prints by Drue Kataoka - 100th Stanford Cal Big Game Print</image:title>
<image:caption>Stanford commissioned Drue to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Stanford/Cal Big Game with the limited edition print, Kick Off 100. For her research, Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame curator Lloyd McGowan gave Drue access to all 100 past Big Game programs from the last century. She also interviewed many football "old-timers" about their Big Game recollections. The print was the first of many of Drue's to sell out and was featured in local print and TV media. Following the success of the Big Game print, Stanford football commissioned Stanford Legends: Portrait of John Elway and Jim Plunkett. Drue interviewed the two giants of Stanford Football history and each print was signed by Elway and Plunkett.</image:caption>

For his retirement present, he commissioned Drue to paint a portrait of a player who represented them all. "Notah comes from humble digs," Coach Goodwin told Drue. Together they releasedCardinal Native: Notah Begay III. Drue also created Tee for Two andFairway to the 21st for the Cal/Stanford Celebrity Golf Invitational at Wente Vineyards as well as Big Game Tee Time. The popularity of Drue's golf paintings led to an invitation to create the signature image for the Toshiba Senior Classic in Newport Beach. The Senior PGA Tour commissioned Classic Cool.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stanford fans were captivated by Stanford Men's Basketball's electrifying run to the 1998 Final Four. Drue's print The Art of the Steal was the only still depiction of Arthur Lee's pivotal steal, that lead to Mark Madsen's game-turning dunk. For her print On Your Mark Get Set Dunk: Mad Dog Madsen Drue met with Mark Madsen in an empty Maples Pavilion for a dunking session. She learned the anatomy of a dunk from #45 himself, Mark Mad Dog Madsen. </image:caption>

In Guarding the Tradition, Drue painted a series of 6 portraits honoring the greatest players in Stanford history. <image:title>Portfolio: Wine Labels by Drue Kataoka - Wine Labels for Au Bon Climat and Others</image:title>
<image:caption>Wine Labels for Au Bon Climat and Others Drue's wine labels catch the eye and hint at the complexity awaiting the wine connoisseur. On the shelf, the Zen austerity and nuances of her black and white labels stand out. Sophisticated, complex, refined - Drue's images are a visually striking presentation of the wine inside. The art of Sumi-e and the art of winemaking share many kinships. Both the Sumi-e artist and the winemaker must be attuned to the earth's cycles and patterns. As a Zen art form, Sumi-e is harmonious with nature. Similarly, winemaking is in a continual dialogue with the rhythm of the seasons. The finest inks like some wine age and deepen over time. Sumi-e unfolds in time bound by strokes. The wine bouquet blooms in time bound by memory. Acclaimed winemaker Jim Clendenen, Au Bon Climat has commissioned Drue to create a series of original artwork for labels for his renowned pinot noir and chardonnay. Drue's exclusive Au Bon Climat labels have been featured in prestigious wine auctions including Chicago Lyric Opera, Make A Wish Foundation, NPR, High Museum of Art in Atlanta to name a few.</image:caption>

<image:title>Now Is The Time - Now Is The Time Print</image:title>
<image:caption>Now Is the Time is a limited edition print celebrating a key moment in history we are all about to help shape. With this artwork, I tried to convey the elation I get from the prospect of seeing a strong woman in the White House-----truly the culmination of an incredible & moving lineage of achievements by many American women. So I placed a few of them in an hourglass of history...In this "American flag" reimagined, the women, in blue & white, are the stars. There are no names. Just achievements and dates. A collective sisterhood. When I read each one, I can imagine all the barriers overcome and can feel the contributions made. Each one builds on the previous one, and truly, today we are standing on the shoulders of many remarkable women. The text gets is smaller as time recedes, as if to say there are so many who will never be counted or credited who have taken us this far. The accomplishments of these women are like grains of sand, so numerous but they have also been invisible in history. A donation to the campaign of $25 or more is appreciated. In order to get a print you need to use the exact following link, and then email info@drue.net to let us know: https://www.hillaryclinton.com/finance/?raiser=112168 Please help us spread the message. <image:caption>Women often respond to the print by telling a story of a “first” they were involved in. I was particularly moved by a group of women I met at the Equal Rights Advocates luncheon in SF, who felt Now Is The Time deeply resonated for them. They had faced brutal sexual discrimination in their work at a shipyard where the gender imbalance was 16 to 1. They spoke out against injustice even though they knew it could cause them their job. For Jamieka Brown & the woman of Norfolk Ship Repair, “Now” is definitely “the Time!”</image:caption>

If you are a mother, you may be surprised to learn that and — ' —decades after the end of a pregnancy. Watch the video here. ✨Did you know that fetal stem cells can and to the site of an injury, such as where a heart attack, occurred. The stem cells then reprogram themselves as to aid in its repair. ❤️‍ ✨As a mother of two young toddlers, I was inspired to create this piece, imagining what those cells felt and perceived if they could feel and perceive, as microscopic individual entities. ✨This artwork explores an , — reimagined through the lens of form, texture, and light. The art reflects on presence, repair, and memory at a microscopic scale — inspired by the science that our children’s cells remain within us. ✨Expressed in the language of #Ambrosia — a signature artwork style from my studio. Traditionally physical sculptures, but now also born through AI. ✨We trained a custom LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation ) on a curated dataset of my Ambrosia works, creating synthetic Ambrosia harnessing artificial intelligence. <image:title>A.I. - The Mirror Desert - Training custom AI models on my own image</image:title>
<image:caption>How does an AI model perceive a person? How does it begin to understand who they are? Why is it that the fragmentary and elusive nature of human memory makes it more beautiful? These questions drive some of my latest experiments—training custom AI models on my own image, then placing them in worlds I imagined and animated.Walking through a mirrored desert of my mind, several AI versions of me exist in a space that is both familiar and surreal, a construct of memory, data, and imagination. A reflection of self, refracted through technology. The appearance & disappearance of each figure down to the fraction of a second and the meaning behind that is deliberate. There are always easter eggs & layers upon layers in my works. Sunglasses by Christian Dior Couture. Watch the full video here.</image:caption>

      <image:title>A.I. - Creating A.I. Ambrosias</image:title>
<image:caption>Is “AI art” more art or more programming? Watch the video here For this artwork, I trained a custom LoRA. LoRA stands for Low-Rank Adaptation and is a technique for fine-tuning large machine learning models, creating a bespoke adaptation. So I trained the LoRA on a curated dataset of my Ambrosia series, optimizing the model to retain the intricate textures and color dynamics of the original physical works. I further refined and expanded the digital model with RunwayML for generative augmentation and Topaz for upscaling and noise reduction, preserving fine details while allowing for creative extrapolation. ️✨ You know, I think the beauty of these tools lies in their combinatorial power—each iteration opens up infinite new pathways for artistic evolution. By the way, the original Ambrosia series is meticulously fabricated with real-world materials, presenting unique engineering challenges. ️ Ambrosia has become one of our signature works, renowned for its dynamic interplay with light—an interactive medium we’ve developed with over 169 billion physical configuration permutations. Conceptually inspired by neural networks, the Ambrosia mimics the way information propagates through weighted layers—just as light refracts, reflects, and transforms through their intricate structures, continually modifying, obfuscating, and revealing new forms. So, taking images of physical Ambrosia works, encoding their intricate structures into LoRAs, and transforming them through a custom AI workflow feels like coming full circle—bridging the physical and digital realms in an endless feedback loop of creation and iteration.</image:caption>

On top of that, we can also share these and other masterpieces with our family, friends, visitors to our blogs/websites, and more. Teachers, students, art lovers, writers, scientists, doctors, designers, entrepreneurs – and, more importantly, people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, ages, and cultures – will now have access to a trove of artworks at a level previously available only to an inner circle of art insiders or elite collectors.</image:caption>
