Introduction

For twenty years I have painted with sumi ink — the discipline of the single stroke, the Zen empty mind. Living Ink carries that discipline into a medium that has never existed before: real ink physics, alive under your fingertip, on the phone in your pocket.

It is not a filter and not a toy. It is an instrument. Every stroke still begins with the hand.

Thirteen Modes

Each of Living Ink’s thirteen modes is built from one of my paintings — its physics tuned until the digital ink moves much the same way the original brush moved.

The contour rings of Tree of Pascal. The loaded wing of Crane. The reef of Skies of Atlantis. The rising launch of UP! The writhing gaze of Medusa.

No two strokes are ever the same. No painting can be repeated.

The Craft

Sumi-e is a 2,000-year-old art form, and its subtleties are unforgiving. Living Ink was refined against a trained hand’s expectations:

• Kasure — the dry-brush skip, where the bristle outruns the ink.
• Nijimi — the bleed into wet paper, soft and irreversible.
• Vorticity — how ink curls without ever collapsing into the same spiral twice.

And the detail most eyes miss: the deepest black tends to live at the torn edge of a stroke, rarely at its center.

The Technology

Beneath the surface runs a real-time Navier-Stokes fluid solver on the phone’s own GPU — thirteen simulations at sixty frames a second, each with its own physics. Every frame is a chain of shader passes: advect the ink, solve for pressure, add the vorticity that makes it curl.

Living Ink was built in a long conversation with Anthropic’s Claude — an artist and an AI refining, stroke by stroke, what two thousand years of ink painting demands of a fluid simulation.

The Painting Is Never Finished

That is the point. Sumi-e teaches that the stroke cannot be finished, only continued in the mind of the viewer. Living Ink extends the thought: the ink keeps moving after you lift your hand. The work is never an object. It is a moment you were present for.
