Commissioned by the Stanford Athletic Department, Kick Off 100 was painted with the bold, ebony-inked strokes of a 2000 year-old art form. Inspired by the rich history of Stanford's and Cal's football programs, Kataoka conducted extensive archival research assisted by the Curators of the Stanford Sports Hall of Fame. Examining programs dating back to 1883, her brush was inked in pigskin history. Painted at the close of the millennium, this highly prized sports collectible sold out at the 100th Big Game where Stanford beat Cal 21-20. Celebrating the storied past and great traditions shared between Stanford and Cal, it incorporates the landmark towers of each campus, old and new elements of the teams' uniforms, and, of course, the axe. The kicker poised on the axe represents the anticipation of Big Game as he hangs in the balance between Stanford's Hoover Tower and the Cal Campanile.
